Three people were taken to Banner University Medical Center Monday evening after the vehicle they were in ran off northbound Interstate 19 between Esperanza Boulevard and Duval Mine Road and struck a tree in the median.
L.T. Pratt, a spokesman for the Green Valley Fire District, said a man and two children were able to get themselves out of their Toyota Highlander before first responders arrived. The mother of the children arrived on the scene following the crash and rode with them to the hospital, he said.
A motorist who had stopped had to be pushed out of the median by fire fighters after becoming stuck in the mud afte the heavy rains, Pratt said.
