Northbound Interstate 19 through Green Valley was closed for two hours Friday after the driver of a pickup crossed the median and struck a semi-truck head-on about noon.
The 39-year-old pickup driver may have been experiencing a medical emergency, causing him to lose control of his vehicle, according to a Green Valley Fire District spokesman. He was ejected from his vehicle and airlifted to a Tucson hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 72-year-old semi driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The pickup driver was southbound in I-19 just south of Duval Mine Road when he crossed the median into northbound traffic, according to GVFD. His truck rolled onto its side.
Officials closed the northbound lanes from Continental Road to Pima Mine Road until about 2 p.m.
